Geriatrics & Gerontology Compton CA
Dr. Rafi and his team at the Allergy, Asthma, and Sinus Institute specialize in the care of elderly patients. Dr. Rafi completed a one-year fellowship in geriatrics and gerontology at UCLA, as well as a specialized program in advanced geriatric medicine. His primary focus was on enhancing immune function and non-cosmetic anti-aging from an academic standpoint.
Our older patients are typically 65 and older, although it’s important to note that age alone doesn’t define being geriatric. For example, you could be 70 years old, working full-time, and in excellent health without being classified as geriatric. Conversely, a 60-year-old with multiple health conditions and a significant medication regimen could fall into the geriatric category. We evaluate your functional abilities both at home and outside, consider your existing health issues, and assess the complexity of your medical history.
With each new patient, we start from the beginning. Our usual approach begins with a thorough medication review and an assessment of recent lab results. We then proceed to order additional tests as necessary.

Your first visit to Dr. Rafi is very comprehensive. We take your history to learn all aspects of your condition and perform an initial examination. Most likely, we will perform skin testing during this visit. It might be skin testing for classic allergies or patch testing for allergic contact dermatitis. We also test for exhaled nitric oxide (called FeNO) to determine the level of allergic inflammation in your lungs. We offer spirometry for assessment of lung function. We can perform nasal endoscopy with a flexible fiber optic endoscopy to assess for nasalpolyps, deviated septum, and candidiasis.
