Geriatrics & Gerontology Covina CA
Dr. Rafi and his team at the Allergy, Asthma, and Sinus Institute specialize in caring for elderly patients. Dr. Rafi completed a one-year fellowship in geriatrics and gerontology at UCLA, along with a special program in advanced geriatrics. His primary focus was on enhancing immune function, non-cosmetic anti-aging, and academic research in the field.
Our elderly patients are typically over 65, but it’s important to note that age alone does not define geriatric status. For example, you could be 70 years old, working a full workweek, and enjoying excellent health without being considered geriatric. Conversely, a 60-year-old with multiple health conditions, managing a regimen of 30 medications, could be classified as a geriatric patient. We assess your functional abilities both at home and outside, consider your existing health issues, and evaluate the complexity of your medical history.
With each new patient, we take a comprehensive approach. Our usual starting point involves a medication review and an assessment of recent lab results. Additional tests are ordered as necessary.

What you can expect on your first visit:
Your first visit to Dr. Rafi is very comprehensive. We take your history to learn all aspects of your condition and perform an initial examination. Most likely, we will perform skin testing during this visit. It might be skin testing for classic allergies or patch testing for allergic contact dermatitis. We also test for exhaled nitric oxide (called FeNO) to determine the level of allergic inflammation in your lungs. We offer spirometry for assessment of lung function. We can perform nasal endoscopy with a flexible fiber optic endoscopy to assess for nasalpolyps, deviated septum, and candidiasis.
