Geriatrics & Gerontology La Mirada CA
Dr. Rafi and his team at the Allergy, Asthma, and Sinus Institute specialize in the care of geriatric patients. Dr. Rafi completed a one-year fellowship in geriatrics and gerontology at UCLA, along with a specialized program in advanced geriatrics. His primary focus was on enhancing immune function and academic non-cosmetic anti-aging strategies.
While most of our geriatric patients are typically aged 65 and above, we understand that being classified as geriatric isn’t solely determined by age. You might be 70 years old, actively working five days a week, and in excellent health without being considered geriatric. Conversely, a 60-year-old individual with multiple comorbidities and a regimen of 30 medications could be classified as a geriatric patient. We evaluate your functional abilities both within and outside your home, assess your comorbidities, and analyze the complexity of your medical profile.
With each new patient, we start the assessment from the ground up. Our approach usually commences with a thorough medication review and an analysis of recent laboratory results. Subsequently, we conduct additional tests as deemed necessary.

Your first visit to Dr. Rafi is very comprehensive. We take your history to learn all aspects of your condition and perform an initial examination. Most likely, we will perform skin testing during this visit. It might be skin testing for classic allergies or patch testing for allergic contact dermatitis. We also test for exhaled nitric oxide (called FeNO) to determine the level of allergic inflammation in your lungs. We offer spirometry for assessment of lung function. We can perform nasal endoscopy with a flexible fiber optic endoscopy to assess for nasalpolyps, deviated septum, and candidiasis.
